Rams' 2007 Season to Mark 125th Anniversary of Football at Fordham
On an autumn afternoon in 1882, a handful of students from St. John's College, located in the Fordham section of the Bronx -- then a suburb of New York City -- hosted a group of students from Seton Hall for a football match.
Little is recorded about that game except that the Bronx gridders managed a 2-0 victory. It was the first football game in the history of the school now known as Fordham University.
The students who took the field that day for the Maroon were the foundation of what would become one of the most-storied programs in college football history.
Since that day, Fordham has amassed another 724 wins and now stands as one of the most successful collegiate football programs to ever play the game.
As recorded by the official NCAA Record Book, Fordham is 15th in all-time wins. Furthermore, Fordham places fifth among colleges playing football at the Division I-AA level (now known as the "Football Championship Subdivision") -- trailing only Yale, UPenn, Harvard and Princeton within the Football Championship Subdivision.
The 2-0 final of Fordham's inaugural game was a harbinger of games to come. In 1933, Fordham hosted mighty Alabama before a sold-out crowd at New York City's Polo Grounds, recording a 2-0 win in a tightly fought contest.
Just over eight years later, on New Year's Day in New Orleans, the Rams bettered Missouri, 2-0 to claim the 1942 Sugar Bowl title.
Today Fordham plays football as a member of the Patriot League, which also includes its historic Jesuit rivals Georgetown University and the College of the Holy Cross, the Rams' two most-played opponents.
Whether they played to sold-out crowds at the Polo Grounds or before fans in the more intimate setting of Jack Coffey Stadium, all who have worn the Maroon are an integral part of the history of this great program.
Fordham will honor all the men who have worn the Maroon at the 125th Anniversary Celebration to be held at the Rose Hill Campus on Friday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m.
